Our 52nd Season
Concord Women's Chorus Announces Eclectic 52nd Season
As it launches its 52nd season, the Concord Women's Chorus (CWC) is celebrating the spirit of "connection." Jane Ring Frank, beginning her 19th year as director of the chorus explains: "’Connection’ is a particularly powerful word for CWC for the 2011-2012 concert season. The group's increasing visibility has led to new collaborations, to renewed partnerships, and to a focus this year on a musical repertoire that celebrates not only our communion with each other but also our communion with the earth.”
The chorus begins the season as a participant in Singing for Peace, an evening of music commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on Sunday, September 11th at 7:00 pm, at Trinitarian Congregational Church, 54 Walden Street in Concord. Several area choruses and ensembles will participate. This event is free to the public and a reception will follow. Next, on Tuesday, December 20th the chorus will once again perform a benefit concert in Weston for Wayside Hospice.
The concert season continues with a holiday concert, Lights of Memory, on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm St. in Concord, (snow date Sunday December 18 at 4:00 pm.) At the heart of this concert is Vaughan Williams’ beautiful Magnificat, scored for women’s chorus and alto solo. The program will also feature Arvo Pärt’s haunting Peace Upon You, Jerusalem and works by Rutter, as well as Michelle Weir’s jazz arrangements of traditional Christmas carols.
Finally, CWC’s spring concert will be on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at 4:00 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church. Entitled Earth Songs, the program is dedicated to songs of nature featuring a stirring set of English Edwardian Partsongs, with songs by Holst, Bridge and Stanford, as well as a set of English madrigals and works by Copland and MacGillivray.
Concord Women’s Chorus is comprised of 60-70 singers from 19 communities in and around Concord, Massachusetts. Expertly directed by Jane Ring Frank, and accompanied by Scott Nicholas on piano, the chorus performs a wide variety of choral music including classical, contemporary and newly composed music.
The chorus began in 1960 as an informal group of women who gathered for the joy of singing together. They became the Concord Madrigals and over the years the group has increased in size, level of quality and variety of music performed. In 2005, the group’s name was changed to the Concord Women’s Chorus. In 2010 the chorus celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special gala concert, which included a commissioned piece entitled Concord Fragments by the renowned American composer Libby Larsen. Also, in the summer of 2010 the chorus performed in several venues on a tour of England. They have also collaborated with the Concord Orchestra in several concerts. CWC is a member of the Greater Boston Choral Consortium and Chorus America.
